Les:

Re: rubys-right-you-cant-trust-that-internet

I'm sure you've had a shed-load of replies over the last 3 years which cover the same ground but here goes anyway…

"Double-trees" are a set of drawbars and harness used to hitch a team of horses to a sleigh. I assume "goose-neck" refers to the hardware on the front of the sleigh. To feed the horses at the back of a sleigh, they'd un-hitch the double-trees and one guy would follow behind, carrying the harness while someone else led the horses to the feed. It sounds like they just got the team re-hitched before the sleigh slid into the channel!

It would have been the most serious of pants-shitting moments because, without the sleigh there was no quick escape. As well, hitching a team during a panic would be difficult, to say the least. The horses would have to believe the guy carrying the double-trees when he called for them to keep backing up. And, because horses know the sound of the hook-up, it'd be up to the guys to jump on the sleigh 'cause the horses probably wouldn't have waited around.

Who paid for the hay that ended up in the water?

Congratulations on recording your Dad's stories. It's a task my sister, brothers and I approach from memory. Love the blog - keep up the great work.

Thank you for the information on Cockburn Island. My father inherited a while back and I just recently found out about it!

Les Says: The whole Island?! Does he want to adopt anymore children?

It might be kind of nice to live somewhere with a population of 2. If the 2 were me and John Travolta.

Les Says: Meh... I'll bet even John Travolta would get boring eventually. That "one of two people....?" The first wife that died....? She got so bored that she "loaned" me a car once over there... I was 14. I ditched it. Then I hit a tree. Really, really, hard. Turns out it wasn't even her car. And she told my dad I stole it. She was bored.

this story is great. But since you mentioned it...I cannot think of another way to pronounce the island so COCK Burn it is. Co burn does not seem to fit like cock does.
I'm an arse!
Also, just wondering how the names (Sandtrampers) came from? Is there a story behind these names or are they insults from the other Island?
I thought I was from a small town. We have 80 kids in each graduating class here. That's like a big city!!!!!

Les Says: ROTFL!! The Manitoulin Islanders are named "Haweaters" because of all the Hawberries that grow there. "Sandtrampers" may have come from "Sand Bay" which the name of the beach that stretches along one end of Cockburn - I think they were probably nicknamed by each other years ago. I'll see if I can't find a little more info.

Oooh! Cockburn has a "SwampSaugen", though! Sort of like a Loch Ness Monster, except - well, yeah - lives in a swamp.
